At Strathcona County Museum & Archives and Beaver Hills Biosphere, we support children in becoming confident, capable people who have a sound sense of their abilities and interests and the ability to take age-appropriate responsibility for their own safety. Unstructured outdoor play is central to this program/experience.
Strathcona County Museum & Archives and the Beaver Hills Biosphere take reasonable steps to manage and balance risks while at the same time allowing children to play freely. Program participants and their legal guardians acknowledge the inherent risks of harm, personal injury, or fatality that may occur during this program. You are required to accept this as a condition of your child’s participation.
The variety of risks is more than can be listed here and will vary depending on the program. However, educators are experienced in first aid and child programming, and their role is to support children in learning and playing while keeping the risks to an acceptable level. Below is a list of some of the more significant risks:
Injuries from executing strenuous and demanding physical activities
Injuries resulting from the presence of harmful plants, natural loose parts, wild animals, and/or ticks
Changing and inclement weather, including storms, high winds, and lightning
The possibility that your child may not heed safety instructions or directions given to the group or delivered individually
Injuries arising from the actions of other children
Negligence on the part of other participants
While the injuries sustained in outdoor activity are mostly minor, they can be severe, and on extremely rare occasions, even fatal. All rules are designed to enhance the safety of your child and others and are to be followed at all times. Failure for a child to follow the rules may result in the end of the child's participation in the program and require parents/guardians to collect the child before the end of the program.
In unstructured, outdoor play, children freely choose which experiences and forms of play they are comfortable engaging in. Your child is under no obligation to participate in all experiences and may choose not to participate at any time during the program.
Medical and Behavioral Policy

Please note that staff members and volunteers of the Strathcona County Museum & Archives and Beaver Hills Biosphere will not administer medication of any kind to a child.
I hereby give my permission to the Strathcona County Museum & Archives and Beaver Hills Biosphere for the use of my child/dependent's picture, taken by employees or volunteers of the Strathcona County Museum & Archives and/or Beaver Hills Biosphere.

Shortness of Breath/Difficulty Breathing

As the child's parent/guardian, I hereby release the Strathcona County Museum & Archives and Beaver Hills Biosphere, its Directors, Officers, Employees, and Volunteers from all actions, claims, and demands for damages, injury or fatality arising from any accidents, illnesses, including COVID-19, that may be caused by, or arise from the participation of the aforementioned child in the Outdoor Activity program. The child named on this form has my consent to participate fully in all outdoor activities associated with an Outdoor Activity program, whether it be held at the Strathcona County Museum & Archives site or other program sites.
