Current Local Artist Spotlight: Andrea Khran

We invite artists to submit proposals for a chalk mural installation in our museum lobby gallery. The mural should be a design that enhances the space, inspires community engagement, and reflects the unique spirit of Strathcona County. Themes could include:

  1. Local History and Heritage - Celebrate Strathcona County’s history, culture, and traditions. This could include historical landmarks, significant figures, or cultural movements that have shaped the community.

    • Example: A mural depicting the evolution of Strathcona County, from its early days to the modern era, featuring elements like agriculture, indigenous heritage, or industrial development.

  2. Nature and Environment - The natural landscapes and ecosystems of Strathcona County. The area’s rivers, parks, and green spaces could be central to the mural.

    • Example: A depiction of the local wildlife, forests, rivers, or seasonal changes in the region, capturing the harmony between nature and human activity.

  3. Futurism and Growth - Explore the future of Strathcona County and how it is evolving. This theme can focus on technological advancements, sustainability, and urban development.

    • Example: A futuristic vision of Strathcona County, with imagery of modern architecture, renewable energy, and interconnected communities, showing how the area is adapting to the future.

  4. Abstraction and Geometry - Incorporate abstract forms and geometric shapes that can both engage viewers and enhance the architectural features of the lobby space.

    • Example: A dynamic mural filled with geometric patterns, flowing lines, or vibrant color fields that could represent the flow of energy or movement through the community.

As our displays rotate three times a year, this offers a dynamic opportunity for artists to showcase their work and interact with a diverse audience. In addition to the mural, artists are welcome to display and sell their art in the lobby, providing a platform to connect with the community and share their creative expressions.

Visit us to enjoy the rotating art and be part of an ever-changing cultural experience.

We acknowledge the traditional lands and territories of the Indigenous Peoples who have lived on these lands and taken care of them since time immemorial. We respectfully acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 territory, lands which are known as Amiskwaciy, Cree for “The Beaver Hills”. This region has been important for the Néhiyawak, Niitsitapi, Tsuut’ina, Anishinaabe, Nakota Sioux, and later the Métis. Many other tribes, including the Inuit, traveled and harvested on these lands. We acknowledge their collective stewardship. We are all Treaty People living together on these lands and we remain responsible to one another, the land, its resources, and to Treaty 6. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation.
