“Footloose star is reminiscent of James Dean”
It was the opening week of Footloose at the Sword and Shield Twin Movie Theatre in Sherwood Park, and a review of the film was published in the News 40 years ago today. Kevin Bacon was hailed as a “star on the rise” who “creates the type of excitement that James Dean did back in the 50s.” The film, based on a common 1950s fear of moral degeneracy in youth caused by the growing rock and roll music genre, was positively reviewed by the article’s author. The author contributed the film’s popularity, in part, to the use of “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins as the film’s theme song.

“Local model wins trip to Georgia”
30 years ago, Ashley Doty won the title of Child Model of the Year for Alberta at just 5 years old. Her prize was a trip to Atlanta, Georgia to attend a convention with modeling and acting lessons and international talent scouts. When asked if she worried about Ashley’s modeling, her mom Sue said she had no worries, stating it was more like a hobby for Ashley and she would never let her daughter do something she didn’t want to do. Ashley told the News that her favourite things about modeling were walking the ramp and doing photoshoots because she got to make expressions. She also said if she made any money by modeling, she planned to buy a puppy.
