“Kids’ Letters to Santa”
40 years ago, the Sherwood Park News posted some letters to Santa from local school children. Popular toys included Cabbage Patch Kids, Care Bears, My Little Pony, Pound Puppies, Transformers, Go-bots, Masters of the Universe Snake Mountain, and Michael Jackson accessories. One youngster said that if Santa couldn’t find a Cabbage Patch Kid she would also accept a unicorn. Parents of the time may remember that the unicorn would have been easier to find!

“1995 Budget cuts spending for third year”
30 years ago, Strathcona councillors were reviewing a budget that cut spending by $1.5million to freeze taxes at 1993 levels. “We have to cut the cloth to fit the times,” said Reeve Iris Evans. The cuts would bring per capita spending to 1987 levels. Highlights of the budget included an increase in monthly transit passes to $47, introduction of a 50 cent monthly fee to cover 911 costs, and a new storm sewer charge of $1.06 monthly for residents in new areas of Sherwood Park. Oh to go back to 1995 prices!
