Introduction

At Strathcona County Museum & Archives and The Strathcona County Heritage Foundation , we support children in becoming confident, capable people who have a sound sense of their abilities and interests and the ability to take age-appropriate responsibility for their own safety. Unstructured outdoor play is central to this program/experience.

Strathcona County Museum & Archives and The Strathcona County Heritage Foundation take reasonable steps to manage and balance risks while at the same time allowing children to play freely. Program participants and their legal guardians acknowledge the inherent risks of harm, personal injury, or fatality that may occur during this program. You are required to accept this as a condition of your child’s participation.

Risks

The variety of risks is more than can be listed here and will vary depending on the program. However, educators are experienced in first aid and child programming, and their role is to support children in learning and playing while keeping the risks to an acceptable level. Below is a list of some of the more significant risks:

  •  Injuries from executing strenuous and demanding physical activities

  •  Injuries resulting from the presence of harmful plants, natural loose parts, wild animals, and/or ticks

  •  Changing and inclement weather, including storms, high winds, and lightning

  •  The possibility that your child may not heed safety instructions or directions given to the group or         delivered individually

  •  Injuries arising from the actions of other children

  •  Negligence on the part of other participants

While the injuries sustained in outdoor activity are mostly minor, they can be severe, and on extremely rare occasions, even fatal. All rules are designed to enhance the safety of your child and others and are to be followed at all times. Failure for a child to follow the rules may result in the end of the child's participation in the program and require parents/guardians to collect the child before the end of the program.

In unstructured, outdoor play, children freely choose which experiences and forms of play they are comfortable engaging in. Your child is under no obligation to participate in all experiences and may choose not to participate at any time during the program.

Medical and Behavioral Policy

If a child has a medical condition, including a severe allergy or a behavioral concern that Strathcona County Museum & Archives and The Strathcona County Heritage Foundation needs to be informed of, it is the parent or guardian's responsibility to ensure sufficient information has been provided on this form. Please note that staff members and volunteers of the Strathcona County Museum & Archives  and Beaver Hills Biosphere will not administer medication of any kind to a child.

We acknowledge the traditional lands and territories of the Indigenous Peoples who have lived on these lands and taken care of them since time immemorial. We respectfully acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 territory, lands which are known as Amiskwaciy, Cree for “The Beaver Hills”. This region has been important for the Néhiyawak, Niitsitapi, Tsuut’ina, Anishinaabe, Nakota Sioux, and later the Métis. Many other tribes, including the Inuit, traveled and harvested on these lands. We acknowledge their collective stewardship. We are all Treaty People living together on these lands and we remain responsible to one another, the land, its resources, and to Treaty 6. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation.
